The Lady Anchors swept through January undefeated winning 10 straight games, which surpasses a school’s record of 9 straight games set in 1989. The streak began with a 51-29 win over Nazareth from Wakefield. And from that point on, the team finished January with a (10-0) record but more importantly remaining undefeated in the Catholic Central League. In that stretch, the lady Anchors played 5 straight road games which is remarkable considering how hard it is to get wins away from your home. “I’m very proud on our teams knack to have resilience through this streak. We won 3 league games which came down to an a overtime win over Lowell Catholic 46-45, a double overtime win over Pope John 47-45, and a one possession nail bitter verse Trinity Catholic 37-35, and Marian 35-34. We are finding ways to win and finish games,” quotes head coach Shawn Thornton. Monday night, the team traveled to Brookline to face non-league opponent Maimonides at 7:30.
The Lady Anchors entered Monday’s game with a (12-3) overall record and a (7-0) league record. Maimonides is also competing to make noise in the Division 4th North State Tournament compiling a (5-3) record entering last night’s action. “Maimonides is a tough place to play. They find ways to hit creative shots and also are a disciplined team that plays with consistent effort for all 4 quarters,” states Thornton. The first quarter began and immediately Maimonides put a box and one on Senior Christy Novembre (Cambridge) trying to get the ball out of her hands. Maimonides did such that but 8th grader Jess Popken (Medford) and Sophomore Allison Caloggero (Medford) made them pay the price. The halftime (SC 30-13) score indicated how well the Lady Anchors trusted each other. Novembre piled up 8 assists dishing to her teammates Caloggero (14 points) and Popken (17 points) for a 31 points by the Lady Anchors backcourt. Novembre finished with (21 points and 12 rebounds) to still lead the Catholic Central League in scoring with 382 total points in 15 games at a 25.4PPG. Maimonides made a few offensive runs but the Lady Anchors held off for the 50-39 victory. “I’m just hoping we can keep it up and win the league and more importantly host the 1st round of the States,” says Thornton.
