The City Somerville Biosafety Committee seeks two new members, and all Somerville residents are invited to apply. One vacancy is for an academic expert, and one is open to any qualified community member. 

The Biosafety Committee works to protect the health, safety, and general welfare of Somerville residents. The Committee promotes the development of a clean and pollution-free industry through the regulation of the research and use of recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid (“rDNA”) and biological agents. The Committee reviews permit applications from institutions researching and developing rDNA and biological agents, approves health and safety processes, and makes recommendations for internal policy and procedures. 

Committee members will be appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. The Committee typically meets monthly for two to four hours. Members will serve three-year terms in a volunteer capacity.
