Life in the Ville by Jimmy Del Ponte
Back in the day there was a dairy queen at the corner of Morrison Avenue and Cedar Street. It was right in the middle of a thickly residential neighborhood. There was also a Friendly’s at the corner of Cedar Street and Highland Avenue. We had it made back then! My mouth waters every time I see the Dairy Queen commercials on television.
Here are some memories shared by my social media friends.
“Artie Barrett owned Dairy Queen. I worked for him. He was a great guy.”
“Our hang out there from probably 1975 until the early 80s Even after the Dairy Queen closed and it became the laundry.”
“Yes, loved the chocolate and butterscotch dipped vanilla cones. Also loved the Friendly’s on the corner of Highland and Cedar that is now East Cambridge Savings Bank.”
“Yes, I remember in the summer they had the raffle to win a bike. My sister worked there one summer.”
“Corner of Warwick, where I lived. Never had enough $ to go as often as I would have liked! Before the DQ it was an empty lot with a small hill. Traffic was so light we actually sledded down it!”
“We lived on Clyde Street. My father owned E & S Box Company on 22 Clyde St. years ago. We sold the property approximately 15 years ago. I moved out in the early 60’s and went to Somerville High. Small world!”
“Mr. Misty’s were the source of many brain freezes back in the day.”
My favorite was the dipped cone. Even though the Dairy Queen and Friendly’s are long gone, I still think of those places when I drive by. It was great having such a great place smack dab in the middle of our neighborhood.
Someday I’m going to hit the Dairy Queen in Quincy for old time’s sake.
