SomerStreets promotes active living and reconnecting with city neighborhoods

SomerStreets: Carnaval returns to East Somerville on Sunday, June 5, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. (rain date: Sunday, June 12). Enjoy interactive games and activities, three stages of live music and dancing, food from around the world, and local craft vendors, plus a dunk tank to soak your neighbors and elected officials. Programming will extend along East Broadway between Kensington and Pennsylvania avenues. The festival begins at 2:00 p.m. with an opening parade led by Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, starting on Broadway at Kensington Avenue.

To ensure public safety at the event, Broadway will close to motor vehicles with parking restrictions between McGrath Highway and Pennsylvania Avenue from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. MBTA buses will be rerouted from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. For full detour information, visit mbta.com

SomerStreets: Carnaval is organized by the City of Somerville, East Somerville Main Streets, and the Somerville Arts Council. SomerStreets events are also planned later this year on Highland Avenue (September 11) and Somerville Avenue (October 30).

SomerStreets is Somerville’s annual series of street festivals that close busy streets to cars and open them to the community. Through SomerStreets, the City and its community partners aim to promote and encourage physical activity, access to fresh foods, and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses and their unique cultural elements in a thriving urban environment.
