The
Somerville Police Department took time to celebrate officers who
exceeded expectations during the past year at a ceremony at police
headquarters on Tuesday.
More than 50 awards were given in categories ranging from facing danger in the line of duty to saving lives.
Actions
that were deemed worthy of praise varied widely. Among those honored
was E911 Dispatcher Maureen Lewon, who saved the life of a suicidal
woman with the help of three officers. Officer Steven St. Hilaire was
also among those honored for saving a life for resuscitating 3-year-old
who stopped breathing.
Also included was the Traffic Unit "Top
Gun" award, given to Officer Steven Johnson for writing the most
citations during the past year.
"I want to thank you on behalf
of the city for everything you've done," Mayor Joe Curtatone said
before posing with each recipient. "Your hard work doesn't always go
unnoticed."
"If you don't hear it, I'll tell you right now the
people who live and work here see the results on the street," Curtatone
added.
Police Chief Anthony Holloway, recently announced as one
of two remaining candidates for the police chief position in
Clearwater, Fla., took a moment to thank Curtatone for his support of
the department.
"I've been here for two years, and it's good having a boss saying, 'What do you need and what else do you want?'" Holloway said.
