Somerville poets Harris Gardner and Gloria Mindock will launch a new poetry series in Somerville Jan 18, 2011. I am proud to be part of it. Fans of the Off the Shelf column in The Somerville News are invited to attend and read in the open mic. See details below, and see you there!

THE FIRST AND LAST WORD POETRY SERIES


Ifeanyi Menkiti has published four books of poetry:  Affirmations (1971); The Jubilation of Falling Bodies (1978); Of Altair, the Bright Light (2005), and Before a Common Soil (2007).  Nigerian-born Menkiti has taught philosophy at Wellesley College since 1973. He is the proprietor of the Grolier Poetry Book Shop in Harvard Square, the oldest all poetry bookshop in the United States.

Doug Holder is the founder of the Ibbetson Street Press, and the arts editor of The Somerville News.  He currently teaches writing at Bunker Hill Community College, and Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. His poetry and prose have appeared in The Boston Globe, Rattle, Endicott Review and many others. He holds an M.A. in English from Harvard University.

Lloyd Schwartz is Frederick S. Troy Professor of English at UMass Boston and a reviewer for The Boston Phoenix and NPR’s Fresh Air. In 1994 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. His most recent poetry collection is Cairo Traffic, and he edited the Library of America Elizabeth Bishop.

The Center for the Arts is located between Davis Square and Union Square. Parking is located behind the armory at the rear of the building. Arts at the Armory is approximately a 15 minute walk from Davis Square which is on the MTBA Red Line. You can also find us by using either the MBTA RT 88 and RT 90 bus that can be caught either at Lechmere (Green Line) or Davis Square (Red Line). Get off at the Highland Avenue and Lowell Street stop. You can also get to us from Sullivan Square (Orange Line) by using the MBTA RT 90 bus. Get off at the Highland Avenue and Benton Road stop.
