The Somerville Community Growing Center kicked off its spring season with Earth Day/Arbor Day: Celebrating the Earth and Our Community on Sunday, April 24. Ninety-three guests, children and adults alike, attended this activity-filled session on a cool, cloudy spring afternoon. In addition, two dozen volunteers and presenters came together to help make the event memorable.
Alive Dance Collective, local artist Jane Sherrill and Mothers Out Front led nature-based art and movement activities for all ages. Representatives from Mothers Out Front, Green & Open Somerville, the Climate Coalition of Somerville, Groundwork Somerville, and the Mystic River Watershed Association were on hand to share information about their organizations and engage with visitors on taking concrete steps to help the environment.
Interpretation was available in Spanish and Portuguese through Rosetta Languages.
The Somerville Community Growing Center is a quarter-acre, 28 year-old community garden space run primarily by volunteers; it is a space for gathering, learning, and celebrating. Its long history includes building local community through coordinating ecological and multicultural educational programs and events.
