Former SHS track athletes back in action

The Men’s Division III New England Indoor Track and Field Championships were held at Middlebury (VT) College on February 26, and former class of 2019 Somerville High School standout Jackson Anderson, Williams College class of ’24, captured first place the Heptathlon (7 events).

In the 60m, Anderson placed first with a new personal record time of 7.08s, which is the fifth best 60m time in EPHS history. He placed second in the long jump with a jump of 6.57m or 21’7″. In the shotput, he finished with a throw of 9.35m/30’8″. He also set a new personal record in the high jump with a jump of 1.81m or 5’10”.

On the second day of the Heptathlon, Jackson set new personal records. He tied the school record time of 8.32s in the hurdles placing first and jumped 3.95m/12’11” in the pole vault placing third. In the final event of the heptathlon, the 1000m run, Anderson ran a time of 2:54.97. He placed first in the heptathlon overall with a score of 4870.

Last weekend, Phillips Magre (SHS class of ‘18) placed 4th in the High Jump (6’7″) at the IC4A championship Meet held at Boston University. The IC4A championship meet is a super conference meet for Division 1 Colleges and Universities from New England and the Mid-Atlantic states and is one of the oldest meets in the USA. Phillips also ran a 47.98 split for 400m in his 1600m relay teams 4th place finish.

Also recently, Worlf Malivert (SHS Class of 2019, now a sophomore at American International College) won the Triple Jump (14.64m/48’0″) on his last of six attempts and placed third in the 60m dash final (6.94) at the New England ICAAA championship meet on February 5, held in Boston at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

Former Northeastern Conference High Jump Champion (5’6′) from the SHS class of 2019, Aislinn Cannistraro, is now back in action jumping for Oberlin College (class of ‘23) in Ohio and plans to return to Somerville to help work with SHS athletes this spring in mid-May.

Also, long sprinter Laura Clervil SHS class of 20 (Middlebury College class of 24) is showing she’s both smart and tough, playing wing position on the Rugby Club.

The 30th Annual Somerville Schools Track and Field Championships for 7th and 8th graders will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at the Brune Fieldhouse Track, Somerville High School. Field events at 3:00 p.m., running events at 3:15 p.m.

The current SHS team will help officiate and offer advice to middle school athletes at the upcoming Track and Field Championships.
