On March 14, 2022, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Lillian “Lily” J. (Ivester) DiFraia, a long-time Somerville resident, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 11, 2022.  She was 86 years old.

Known affectionately as “Lily,” she was born one of five children in Cambridge to Ellen (Barrett) and Ernest Ivester  She met the love of her life, Ralph DiFraia, in 1955 and together they began their family, enjoying many happy years together.  They were always a striking couple, impeccably dressed, loved dancing, travelling and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to being a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, Lily was employed for many years at the Beacon Street Star Market where she could be found behind the courtesy booth, assisting customers and neighbors, always with a friendly smile.  As a devout Irish Catholic, she was a faithful parishioner of St. Catherine of Genoa in Somerville.  Above all else, she was devoted to her family, she cherished time spent together, cooking Sunday dinners, gathering family together during Holidays, and who could forget her most cherished memories of Christmas Eves past, her favorite night of the year.  She loved to cook, and mastered the art of a great Sunday sauce, or as she referred to it, “Gravy.” Lillian’s recipe was often attempted, but never duplicated because no one ever came close to what was affectionately known as “Lily’s Gravy.” Lillian will always be remembered by her family and friends as a strong, beautiful and faith-filled woman who lived simply and loved deeply.

Lillian was the loving wife of the late Ralph DiFraia.  She is survived by her cherished children; Lillian DiFraia-Alves and her companion John Fraser; James DiFraia and his wife Patti of Somerville; Michael DiFraia and his wife Susan of Malden.  She was the beloved nana of John, Julia and Elizabeth DiFraia; dear sister of Dorothy Shappe, Carol Margie and the late Maryellen Lawrence and James Ivester.  She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
