Long-time Somerville resident, John Ragno, 82 passed away peacefully surrounded by family, in his Otis Street home on February 22, 2022 [after a prolonged illness]. Mr. Ragno is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years Louise, five adored daughters—Louise, Donna, Suzann, Rosalie, and Denise—and seven grandchildren who were the light of his life: Kerrie, Billy, Joshua, Jennifer, Frankie, Cody, and Justin.
Before retiring to spend more time with family, Mr. Ragno worked in the restaurant filter business. When at home, he enjoyed engaging in home improvement projects.
John Ragno will be remembered for his strong work ethic, and dedication to family. He taught his daughters to be strong and self-sufficient—as well as ardent New England Patriots fans. One of the very first Patriots’ season ticket holders, Mr. Ragno enjoyed cheering on the team whether in person or on television. Sundays were always game days for the family, also featuring backyard games of hockey and football.
Over fifty-five (55) years ago, John Ragno started a Christmas tradition, lighting up the family’s home from top to bottom and beyond with festive decorations. Featured as a premier attraction on the more recent Somerville Arts Council’s Annual Illumination Tours. Mr. Ragno’s love of the holiday eventually extended to three houses on Otis Street with displays including a light-up Nativity, Santas, candy canes, a train, gingerbread house, and his daughters’ favorite cartoon characters. The family will continue this tradition, in honor of Mr. Ragno.

There are not enough words to express my deepest condolences to the family. I have known John and his family for 40 plus years and he and his family were great friends and Hugh asset to the neighborhood and the city. His Christmas decoration on three houses were extraordinary. I think the electric company had to add an extra fuel rod to light up Otis st. See u on the other side my friend.

My sincerest condolences to Louise and the rest of the Ragno family. John was a great guy, friendly to everyone. John was a pillar in the community. He was always concerned about the quality of life issues in his neighborhood. Anytime there was a city meeting regarding issue’s in his neighborhood John would attend and offer his opinion. John will certainly be missed by all. RIP.
My brothers and I have fond memories of summers spent at the lake with the Ragno family. We thought it was a regular thing that people cooked eggs and bacon at the beach. John would happily cook breakfast for all of us!
Truly he was a man who touched the lives of so many. Praying that you are surrounded by God’s comfort and strength during this difficult time.
Our deepest sympathy to Louise and family. We have know John for 58 years and have many great memories. John was a great person and a really good friend. He was always just a phone call away. Not only did he work in the restaurant filter business but knew which ones were good and we would go with them. He was a great family man!! RIP John!.
I was proud to call you my second dad. Your warmth and love could be seen in your family. You and your family helped shape my personality and independence. I have many wonderful memories of being with everyone. And whether it was good memories or being grounded for being bad, I thank you. Sending love and support to everyone.
