Flag Raising on Prospect Hill

On December 18, 2021, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

The City of Somerville’s 246th annual flag-raising ceremony will take place on New Year’s Day, Saturday, January 1, 2022. This celebration will begin at City Hall at 11:30 a.m. with a procession to the Prospect Hill Monument. At the monument, there will be a short program including Colonial songs, light refreshments, and speeches.

This annual ceremony commemorates the raising of the nation’s first official flag, featuring thirteen red and white horizontal stripes, atop Prospect Hill on New Year’s Day, 1776. At the time, Prospect Hill was a key site in a string of fortifications created by Washington and the Continental Army in their siege of British troops in Boston during the first year of the American Revolution.
