Constellations on a Winter’s Night
Biting wind nipped at my cracked dry lips
While naked branches swayed in a chorus above our heads,
But my gaze fixed on the imaginary line that connected
The tip of your fingers to the
Endless expanse of blackness that stretched like
A great tarp pulled taut over us.
Blackness dotted by an array of sparkling freckles,
Patterns mythologized since the dawn of time and travel.
Mesmerized, the legends came alive in my mind as you
Traced the illuminated shapes in the skies:
A beastly hunter, flanked by his dogs, in an endless chase with the bull,
Or the flying horse that carried heroes on their quests,
Or the vain queen who doomed her daughter to be chained in the path of a monster…
