Free Open Streets event to feature live music, a costume parade, roller-skating, and more

Join us at the last SomerStreets festival of the year, the spooky and fun “Monster Mashed-Up,” on Sunday, October 31, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. (rain date November 7) on Somerville Avenue between Hawkins Street and Laurel Street.

SomerStreets is the City of Somerville’s take on the internationally renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other activities. Through SomerStreets, the City and its community partners aim to promote and encourage easy access to physical activity and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses and their unique cultural elements in a thriving urban environment.

Activities will include:

·       Live music on two stages:

▪        Stage at 455 Somerville Avenue featuring: 

•        2:00 – 3:00 p.m. The School of Rock Wakefield

•        3:45 – 4:45 p.m. The School of Rock Watertown

•        5:00– 6:00 p.m. The School of Rock Natick

▪        Stage at 389 Somerville Avenue featuring:

•        2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Headband

•        3:00 – 4:45 p.m. Pressure Cooker

•        5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Louder than Milk

·       2:00 – 5:00 p.m. – “Ghosts of Milk Row Cemetery” tours, hosted by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission and the Somerville Museum at 400 Somerville Avenue. Tour the historic burial grounds and chat with “ghosts” about their past lives in Somerville. Suggested $5 donation.

·       2:00 – 6:00 p.m. – Roller-Skating Disco Party with DJ Brother Cleve. Bring your skates and roll with us!

·       3:00 p.m. – Halloween costume parade led by the School of Honk! Bring your costume and meet us at Hawkins Street.

·       Face Painting by Flor Delgadillo

·       Dia de los Muertos Celebration Activities with Andrea and Angelica Menchaca and food with Nibble Kitchen’s Estela Calzada

·       Handstands, juggling, acrobatics, and comedy for all ages with Cate the Great

·       Magic with Just Felice

·       Parkour

·       Pumpkin carving with Somerville Recreation

To ensure public safety at this SomerStreets event, the following road closures and parking bans will be in effect:

·       Somerville Avenue (Hawkins to Laurel Street): Closed to all vehicular traffic 12:00 – 8:00 p.m.; no parking 10 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

·       Laurel, School, Quincy, Church, and Putnam streets will be two-way between Summer Street and Somerville Avenue, 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., to allow access for abutters. Bow Street will also be two-way for abutters.

·       MBTA bus 87 will be rerouted from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For locations of rerouted bus stops, visit MBTA.com.
