Voters have until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13, to register to vote or update their voter information for the November 2 election. Massachusetts voters have the option to register online or via a paper form. To register by mail, call (617) 625-6600 ext. 4200 and request a form be mailed to you or download one from the Elections website, somervillema.gov/elections. Don’t forget that your form must be received by the Somerville Elections Department by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13.

Don’t forget, on October 8–10 Lyndell’s Bakery in Ball Square will be holding their annual Sean Collier Memorial Weekend. Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 7 City Councilor Katjana Ballantyne, and city staff invite you to a virtual community meeting to review the final design for schoolyard renovations at the West Somerville Neighborhood School. The design includes a small turf field, age-appropriate play structures, active areas for kickball and basketball, a climbing wall, significantly more tree canopy, tables and seating, new safety surfacing and fencing, and drainage improvements, among other features. Curtatone, the Somerville Commission for Women, and RESPOND Inc. invite residents to join them for the annual Domestic Violence Vigil on Tuesday, October 26, to remember and honor those who lost their lives to domestic violence in 2021. The City of Somerville is set to debut the new Assembly Square Neighborhood Plan, a master plan and zoning recommendation document that establishes the long-term vision for Assembly Square, Somerville’s newest and fastest growing neighborhood. Once adopted, it will provide the basis for decision making, development, and further planning as Somerville and the Assembly Square Neighborhood move into the future. After more than a year engaged in a comprehensive public process, the city has finalized the draft plan and is ready to share it with the community. Please join the Planning Division as they present the plan virtually on Wednesday, October 13, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting link will be posted before the event at somervoice.somervillema.gov/assemblynp. After the presentation, community members will be able to provide feedback before the plan goes to the Planning Board for official consideration on November 4.

Somerville High School students are encouraged to enter the Somerville Mathematics Fund 2nd Annual Game Jam. Teams of three students vie for top honors and prizes in a game-creation competition. Continuing through Friday, October 29, excluding weekends, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will implement a closure of the Foss Park/ Latta Brothers Memorial Pool parking area in the City of Somerville from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to accommodate work on the Latta Brothers Memorial Pool Modernization Project. No roadways will be closed or blocked due to this work, but the public is advised to be cautious of construction vehicles entering and exiting the site at the Fellsway West/ Jaques Street intersection.

Somerville Community Corporation, in partnership with the City of Somerville, is hosting a job fair to connect residents with local construction employment opportunities. Anyone looking to learn more about the different jobs that exist within the construction industry is welcome. This job fair will focus on opportunities with the ongoing Boynton Yards development, but representatives from organizations that provide training in the construction field will also be present. No prior construction experience is required to attend. The Healey Community Play Area ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 Meacham Street has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 7, at 1:45 p.m. Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Ward 4 Councilor Jesse Clingan invite you to celebrate the newly renovated playground, formerly known as the tot lot, which features state-of-the-art play structures for children ages 2 through 5, an expanded natural area with log seating, and bright colors and graphics. The design was developed in partnership with the Healey School community and the Friends of Healey group. Renovations were funded entirely using Community Preservation Act funds. The Healey Community Play Area is the first phase of a larger, transformational schoolyard renovation project focused on equity and access that is currently under construction and expected to be complete in the summer of 2022.

The Somerville Board of Health (BOH) approved a face-covering mandate for all indoor public places. The mandate applies to anyone two or older, and face coverings can be removed when people are actively eating or drinking. Masks should have a snug fit and cover the nose and mouth.
