GLX project construction is now approximately 80 percent complete, and work continues to advance in all areas of the project at a rapid pace. To view our most recent progress photos, click here.

Upcoming night work

As COVID-19 supply chain issues begin to improve, items including noise wall panels that were backlogged over the winter and early spring months are now arriving onsite in many areas with short notice. Therefore, in order to maximize efficiencies, GLX contractors are scheduling night work activities based on readily available materials and resources.

While the work hours may be sporadic at times, notable night work activities planned for the immediate future include:

  • In the Brickbottom Condominium area off Fitchburg Street in Somerville, wall panel placement will proceed around-the-clock on Friday and Saturday (June 18 and 19). This work will primarily focus on the viaduct walls along the GLX Union Branch and Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line. Residents should expect the use of heavy machinery and engine noise.
  • On the entire east/north side of the Medford Branch (from Monsignor O’Brien Highway to Medford/Tufts Station),wall panel placement work will continue at night on a sporadic basis over the next few weeks. Residents should expect the use of heavy machinery and engine noise.
  • In addition to wall panel placement, signal and electrical work is expected in and around the station areas at night. This work is usually quieter than wall panel placement as it does not generally require the use of heavy machinery.

In order to complete the work quickly and efficiently, hi-rail vehicles (trucks and heavy equipment modified to operate on rails) will be in use along both branches.  In addition, the yellow construction train known as the Multi-Purpose Machine (MPM) will be used at night within work zones along the entire Medford Branch. These vehicles are required by federal regulations to sound their horns during frequent stops and starts.

We apologize for any disruption caused by this work.

As we continue to advance, the project will make every effort to keep abutting neighborhoods apprised of upcoming nightwork through regular email contact. We also encourage our followers to check for regular construction updates at www.mass.gov/glx.
