Obituary: Anthony ‘Tony’ Patrick McDaid

McDaid, Anthony “Tony” Patrick – Passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2020 at the age of 81. Born on March 5, 1939, to Anthony and Anna (Monahan) McDaid. He was a lifelong resident of Somerville, growing up on Dane street with his siblings, the late John and Mary McDaid. He married the late Margaret (Kennedy) McDaid, his loving wife of 58 years. He was the best father to his children: Timothy, Katie, Matthew, his wife Stacy and the late Kellie McDaid. Papa Tony’s greatest joy were his 6 grandchildren: Emily, Kathryn, Dillon, and Grace McDaid, Max Costa and Haleigh Doane. Tony is also survived by his sister-in-law Mary Toomey and many beloved nieces and nephews.

You could always count on being greeted by our dad with a huge smile and dark sunglasses. He never failed to crack a joke or two, especially from his memories on Dane, Skehan and Beacon Streets. His strength, kindness, optimism and zest for life were evident in every interaction you were lucky enough to have with him.Tony was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, he joined in 1955 at the age of 17, one of his proudest endeavors of his life. He was also a proud member of the Somerville Fire Department and retired in 1981. To this day, you could still find him sporting an SFD or USMC T-shirt everywhere he went and telling people of the time he served in the military and on the fire department. Papa Tony was his grandchildren’s biggest fan and was well known at the local hockey rinks and ball parks. Tony was the epitome of selflessness and spent his entire life doing for others, especially for his family. Tony would have wanted us all to continue to live the way he did, with a permanent smile on his face and a kind word for everyone we encounter.

Anthony was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his name to The Ryan Harrington Foundation, P.O. Box 45707, Somerville, MA 02145
