For one night, all eyes were turned on the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Rink, as the Boston Bruins Hockey Alumni battled the Somerville Police Hockey squad in.
Led by veteran Rick Middleton, the alumni team featured greats Terry O’Reilly, Ken Hodge, Ken Linseman, Bob Sweeney, Don Marcotte, Bruins broadcaster Andy Brickley, and Brad Park.
With nearly 400 people on hand, Mayor Joseph Curatone dedicated the renovations of the rink to the Somerville Police Department as well as the city itself.
During the game, detective Mario Oliveira, who was shot Nov. 2 serving an arrest warrant, was honored as well. Other highlights included Blades the Bruins’ Mascot, who recorded two points in the event while officer Michael Capassoi, also added two points in the event.
The event raised money for Somerville youth hockey leagues.
“Hockey is a very expensive sport and events such as this help to give all Somerville children a chance to learn and play a great sport,” said Curatone. “This also will help to keep Somerville Youth Hockey (SYH) as one of the lowest priced programs in the area.”
In addition to the game, raffles of various prizes were held including, a chuck a puck contest, which featured an ipod.
Sponsors of the event included Winter Hill Bank, Curtatone, Bonney Automotive, Ray Zongetti, Green and Yellow Cab Co., Pats Tow and Somerville Car Wash.
As for the game itself, the Bruins Alumni coasted to a 15-8 win over Somerville Police Department, but even in defeat, all who participated served as the victors.
