Joshua Scarry saved one of his finest performances for last.
The senior running back rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown and Devon Hairston added two scores as the Highlanders coasted to a 34-6 win over Matignon in Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day match-up at Dilboy Field.
The rivalry, now in its fourth year, will continue for just one more year as Somerville will face-off against Cambridge starting in 2012.
With the win, the Highlanders finished the season at 4-6 for the second consecutive year.
“It’s always great to win on Thanksgiving, and the guys did a nice job,” said coach Harry
Marchetti. “It’s just a great feeling right now to end your season on a win, and the kids had one of the toughest schedules in the state.”
After a quick three and out by the Matignon Warriors, the Highlanders responded quickly on a 63-yard touchdown run by Zach Sciuto on the drive’s third play. Followed by a successful extra point by Phoenix Huertas, the Highlanders established a 7-0 lead.
Aiming to battle back, the Warriors threatened to trim the lead, driving to the Highlander 26-yard line before an impressive defensive stand held ground.
“Our defense did a nice job, stopping them when they had to,” said Marchetti.“They got into our territory quite a bit, but we were able to make the key stops on defense, and that was huge.”
Led by Hairston, the Highlanders engineered a 12-play drive that culminated in a three-yard plunge in the end zone en route to a 13-0 lead.
Hairston struck again moments later, intercepting a pass from Tom Farren and returning it to the Warrior 12. On the ensuing play, quarterback Robert Pratt fired a six yard touchdown pass to Sciuto en route to a commanding 20-0 lead.
Already ahead by three touchdowns, the Highlanders increased the lead to 27-0 early in the third quarter as Scarry ignited a 70-yard touchdown run.
“(Scarry) had a great game, and Hairston did a tremendous job on both sides of the ball,” said Marchetti. “We had a lot of guys that were able to contribute on offense and they did a tremendous job.”
Securing the win, the Highlanders increased the lead to 34-0 as Hairston added his second touchdown of the day, this time on an eight yard scamper. Averting the shutout, the Warriors trimmed the lead to 34-6 as Jayme Thompson hauled in a five yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback John Flaherty.
“We’re hoping we’ll be able to come back with a strong season,” said Marchetti. “We have a lot of people returning and we’re hoping we’ll be stronger. The kids have to really come into camp next year and ready to go. It was definitely a great game, especially for the seniors, who worked so hard this year.”
