Cycling has grown in popularity and practice in recent years, and the numbers of those who commute to and from work or school, go shopping, or simply take leisurely rides on their bikes has grown considerably. It is a trend that has taken hold nationwide.
Somerville prides itself on being one of the most bikeable cities in the nation, so it stands to reason that it should stand out among the many others in its commitment to make cycling both fun and safe for riders, motorists and pedestrians alike.
Clearly, many of our narrow streets are poorly equipped to handle both cyclists and motorists, not without considerable compromise and mutual courtesy.
City planners give a lot of thought to designing practical solutions to the needs of everyone. Aiding in these efforts are citizen organizations such as the Somerville Bike Safety Committee and the Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee, who advocate for the interests of the biking public. They are especially involved in advising civic leaders and the general public in ways of improving the quality and quantity of biking routes, as well as promoting safe cycling practices.
Certain streets will be easier to modify for more cycling than others. In many cases, it will be up to the operators of each mode of transport to make way for the other as these routes are developed.
So be careful out there when you hit the streets, but certainly enjoy yourselves. Whether you are behind the wheel or behind a set of handlebars, remember to be both courteous and cautious at all times.
