On or around June 22, City of Somerville contractors will establish a work zone at the Washington St./Somerville Ave. intersection to support the next phase of the Somerville Ave. Utility and Streetscape Improvements Project. The intersection is expected to remain closed for approximately four months. During that time, contractors will continue installing sections of the new stormwater box culvert drainage system, which will separate stormwater from the city’s sanitary sewer system and reduce historical surface flooding in and around Union Square.

For the duration of this phase, direct access to Washington St. from Somerville Ave. and Prospect St. will be restricted. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Somerville Ave. Through traffic will be diverted via Somerville Ave. and Medford St. Access to Washington St. will be maintained at the Medford St. intersection, as the Union Square parking lot and local businesses will remain open.

MBTA bus routes 86, 91, and CT2 will follow the traffic detour, so stops on Washington St. between Somerville Ave. and Medford St. will not be serviced for the duration of this phase. Instead, temporary service will be offered at existing stops on Somerville Ave. Also during this phase, the 87 bus will be taken off its current diversion via Washington St. and will return to its regular route on Somerville Ave. Signage will be posted accordingly, and service alerts will be updated on www.mbta.com.
