(Message from Somerville Public Library)
Dear Community Members,
It is with the heaviest heart that I share with you the passing of librarian, George Pierce. George began his career at the Somerville Public Library as a part-time ‘page’ in 1968, at the tender age of 18, and became part of the full-time staff in 1972. To say George represented the heart and soul of how we approach library service in Somerville is not an overstatement. He is remembered by library staff as a person who loved his job, his family, music, fast cars, and a good IPA. He was a prankster, and always enjoyed a good laugh. He thoroughly enjoyed his interactions with his co-workers, and with you, and is going to be missed terribly.
How fortunate we were to have his service for more than 50 years.
These have been challenging times for many of us, but there are signs of better days ahead. It is Pride Month, a time when we affirm, support, celebrate, and advocate for the LGBTQ community.
There are peaceful protests taking place across the country, and right here in Somerville, that are empowering generations young and old to stand up to institutional racism. And we are starting to resume our daily routines, with much guidance and caution.
Please know that we are working hard to bring back library services to you. As soon as it has been deemed safe to reenter our facilities, we will be offering contactless pick-up for actual, tangible library materials! I can’t wait until we can hand off bags of picture books, summer reads, and anything else on our shelves that you’ve been missing.
Thank you for your continued patience and support. Take care.
Cathy

For Mr. Pierce, the patrons came first.
Whenever I came to the Central Library Circulation Desk to pick up
my Requested Books, the minute he saw me, he dove for my Requests like a duck on a June Bug.
Talk about public service!
Mr. Pierce, Ave Atque Vale. Hail and Farewell.
