It might have been a Republican night across the country but in Somerville it was the Democrats who were celebrating.

State Senator Patricia D. Jehlen, a Democrat, beat Republican challenger Dave Carnevale to keep her senate seat which includes Somerville, Medford, Winchester and parts of Woburn. Jehlen won about 62 percent of the vote, according to early returns.

Steve Grossman, of Somerville-based Grossman Marketing Group, was leading Republican candidate Karyn Polito by 10 percentage points with 70 percent of precincts reporting at Somerville News press time.

Democrat Sal DiDomenico claimed victory Tuesday night in the race for the State Senate Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex seat. DiDomenico easily defeated Republican Barbara Bush to keep the state senate seat he won earlier this year after former senator Anthony Galluccio resigned.
