Upcoming Bridge Closures

On February 21, 2019, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Somerville residents and neighboring commuters are gritting their teeth and girding themselves for the tough times ahead following the Ball Square bridge closure.

Beginning March 22, 2019, three major bridges in Somerville, MA will be closed to facilitate construction of the Green Line Extension (GLX) project. Traffic detours will affect local and regional commutes through Medford, Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston. Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists should plan accordingly and may want to seek alternate routes.

Bridge Closure Schedules:

Broadway Bridge at Ball Square on the Somerville / Medford border

– Closed March 22, 2019 to March 2020

Washington Street Bridge (Underpass) in East Somerville

– Closed April 2019 to Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 to Fall 2020

Medford Street Bridge at Gilman Square in Somerville

– Closed July 2019 to Spring 2020

For further details on bridge closures, including directions and helpful area maps, please visit www.greenlineextension.org.

The closures of the Broadway and Medford Street Bridges are necessary in order to accommodate the construction of new Green Line light-rail tracks. Currently, these bridges are only wide enough to accommodate the existing commuter rail service that operates beneath them. The Washington St. Bridge requires a complete reconstruction of abutments and structural span in order to accommodate the addition of new light-rail transit service and the Community Path.

For urgent matters relating to GLX construction work please use our 24/7 Construction Hotline – (855) GLX-INFO (459-4636).

For all other Green Line Extension inquiries please contact the project at info@glxinfo.com.

The closure of the Broadway Ball Square bridge places a serious life safety issue on the residents of West Somerville. There has been “delay in traffic” radio calls by fire/police/ems vehicles responding to emergency calls do to increased traffic jams created by constructon and newly installed lane restrictions.
In the 70s’, when the old steei Broadway Ball Square bridge was being demolished and replaced with the present concrete bridge.life safety was the priority and the first thing done was instalation of a temporary bridge beside the old structure. There is no justification to not placing a temporary bridge in place right now. We cannot afford to having delayed responses to the West Somerville area. Especially with a commnity school in this area.

Unfortunately, safety is no longer the priority. Bicycle lanes seem to be the only priority.
