Plainpoem

And so it falls to me this evening,

moments ago and even yet—

mid-sentence on a two-day task,

occupied, endeavoring—

to feel the blueness of the snow,

its height beneath the Douglas firs,

to see the walkers tread upon the air

it seems, and how the cold and color

of it all, the bristling pines, the lights,

the silence through the windowpane

are given me to hallow as I can,

with words, and while it darkens, still
