Somerville received the “Healthiest City in Massachusetts” award at the Massachusetts Health Council’s 90th Anniversary Celebration on October 12. The award was presented to Somerville for its active promotion of healthy living, and general wellness throughout the community.

Mayor Joe Curtatone said he was honored to receive the award, and credits the Shape Up Somerville campaign. The Shape Up Somerville campaign aims to increase exercise among residents, and promotes healthy living.

“Since its inception in 2003, Shape Up Somerville has received national acclaim for the work we’ve done to combat childhood obesity. I am extremely proud of our most recent recognition by the Massachusetts Health Council, however, because it not only honors the history of Shape Up Somerville, but how far this city has come in promoting active living and instituting new policies and infrastructure upgrades to make Somerville a healthier, happier community,” Curtatone said.

Somerville has been home to several events including a citywide fitness challenge, Health and Wellness Fair, and several community potluck dinners that contributed to the creation of a healthier environment.

Susan Servais, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Health Council, said, “We had this celebration and honored a number of organizations and individuals who have really made outstanding contributions. The city of Somerville really stands out. Starting with their Shape Up initiative, which really targeted all the segments of the community, anyone who lived there, worked there, or played there. It enabled residents to become more active, and live healthier lives.”
