A 45-year-old man stole a blind man’s cane after drinking vodka and passing out in a flower bed Oct. 11, police said.

Daniel Ryan, homeless, allegedly stole a cane that belongs to his friend, a blind man who told officers he was suicidal, police said.

When Somerville police officer Alan Monaco confronted Ryan, he was drinking vodka on a bench at South and Medford streets. He allegedly went into a tirade of expletives that slowed down passing traffic, police said.

Ryan allegedly jumped off the bench, kicking and punching at Officer Monaco. Police said Ryan kicked Monaco in the shin twice.

Officers hit Ryan with a burst of pepper spray and handcuffed him. He was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a public employee, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and a warrant charge.
