Eight kids are seated criss-cross applesauce at the end of a driveway. They start cheering before the song even begins and impatiently wait for the show to start by throwing little bits of paper at their friend, Finley Scobel.
Sitting center stage with his drum kit that reads “The Hoopers,” Scobel will tell you he’s 5-and-7/8-years old. It’s clear by his black glitter pants and dark sunglasses that the kid was born to rock.
The young music prodigy was just one of over 250 musical acts put on a show in the front yards of Somerville in this year’s PorchFest. The citywide event began in 2011 and is hosted by the Somerville Arts Council.
Everything from nerd rap to folk-rock hippy country to “glammy poppy punky” music made an appearance.
PorchFest will be held in surrounding Boston neighborhoods this summer, including Brookline, Quincy and Jamaica Plain. For more information on upcoming events and dates, visit www.porchfest.info.
