The City’s annual Patriot’s Day celebration, to be held at Foss Park on Mon., April 16 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Annual celebration of the historic event to include colonial games, refreshments, visit by “Paul Revere” on horseback

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 1 Alderman Matt McLaughlin, and the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission invite all residents and community members to the City’s annual Patriot’s Day celebration, to be held at Foss Park on Mon., April 16, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Co-sponsored by the Preservation Commission, Historic Somerville, the Somerville Museum, and East Somerville Main Streets, the day’s events will include Colonial games, light refreshments, live music by the Somerville High School band, and a visit from “Paul Revere” on horseback on his historic ride from Boston to Lexington through Somerville.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with music, games and refreshments, followed by a brief speaking program and poetry read by Somerville youth, and the arrival of Paul Revere. Children will receive a Colonial Times Passport and are invited to participate in various Colonial-era games such as hoop rolling, whirly gigs, and Jacob’s ladder. Children who complete each of the six stations will receive a small prize. Volunteers will be dressed in traditional Colonial attire and attendees are encouraged to do the same.

Few Volunteers Still Needed for Colonial Fair

Event organizers are seeking adults and high school students to help publicize and execute the Colonial Fair at Foss Park on Monday, April 16. Volunteers are needed in several areas, including: community outreach, working with youth to create drawings about the event and our community in Colonial times, youths’ reading short poems on the podium, and helping with the Colonial Passports. New ideas for the games are also welcome. All volunteers will be asked to dress in Colonial era clothing, and we have clothing to lend and/or tips for what to wear of your own. We’ll also teach you games to lead, including Bilbo catchers, cat’s cradle, hoop rolling and ring toss.

For more information or to volunteer, contact SHPC Director Brandon Wilson at 617-625-6600 ext. 2532, or Historic Somerville at admin@historicsomerville.org, or 917-572-8780.
