Our condolences to the family and many friends of Gerald “Jerry” Saint Fleming, who passed away this week at MGH. He had many things ailing him and passed quietly. Jerry leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Mary. He was very well known in political circles both here in Somerville and around the state. His sense of humor and strong will and loyalty to his many friends over the years is hard to find today. Jerry was a good friend of ours here. We don’t have the arrangements yet, but we know it’s going to be at Doherty’s Funeral Home here in Somerville. We will post the details on our website as soon as we get them.

Out of the MGH and coming along fine is our famous local barber, Tony Alibrandi. He’s back home now and we hear he’s itching to get back to work at the shop. We hope that will happen soon. A lot of his customers miss him. But fear not. Paul, his able bodied assistant is handling everything. He’s doing a good job, but even Paul wants Tony back to work.

Another one in and out of MGH is Dan O’Meara, a great guy. We hope he’s back home soon with Joan, his lovely wife, and back to see his friends at Sally’s.

In and out of MGH is our good friend Charlie Chisholm. On top of all the stuff that’s going on with him in rehab, he caught an infection and was sent back immediately. Now we hear he’s in Danvers at Hawthorne Hills rehab. Hopefully, he comes home to enjoy his new house in Stoneham soon.

Best wishes for a quick recovery to Kathi Fee, who recently underwent major surgery and had a slight relapse, but is now home again and recovering. We wish her the very best for getting back on her feet again real soon. Kathi is the wife of Eamon Fee. Both are great and kind hearted people.

Demets Donuts in Medford is getting very busy, but those donuts and the large variety are like the old Day’s Donuts, huge and tasty. Almost a sin facing you when you come in for just coffee. It’s hard to not get that jelly or lemon, not to mention the coconut donuts. The Somerville Times is available every Wednesday at the donut shop. Stop in, get a coffee and few of those delicious donuts, or maybe the real – and we mean real – egg sandwiches, from real eggs.

Very nice to see Katie McDaid back on the job. We didn’t realize it’s been many months since we saw her last. She’s very nice and in our opinion she’s a total professional and always was in her capacity in the SPD. We are glad she’s back to the job she loves.

What a great article last week in The Times on our good friend and attorney Edwin Smith of Somerville. A story done by Bill Shelton on Ed and his lovely wife Martha French, who are involved with Habitat for Humanity. Last November, they spent a couple of hot weeks in Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java. They are a great couple. Check out the awesome display on Highland and Sycamore, Martha’s creative touch and her beautiful little museum. We think they make all of us here proud that such great and caring people like Ed and Martha are part of our community. The story is good reading.

Non-profit organizations in Somerville are invited to apply for grants from the Tufts Neighborhood Service Fund (TNSF). The TNSF collects donations from faculty and staff at Tufts University throughout the year and then awards small grants to community-based, charitable organizations that serve Tufts’ host communities. All of the TNSF funds go to nonprofit organizations. In this way, TNSF supports not only community organizations but also the work of the many Tufts students, staff, faculty, and alumni who volunteer with them. Interested organizations should contact the Government and Community Relations office at Tufts University at (617) 627-3780 or obtain an application at http://go.tufts.edu/TNSF. Individual grants will be made in amounts ranging from $250 to $2,000. Applications are due by Friday, March 2, and awards will be announced before April.
