St. Clement football shut out in loss

With an even 1-1 record coming off a physical win 14-0 over Keefe Tech, the St. Clement High School football team aimed to earn their second win in three games. Instead, the Mystic Valley Eagles had other thoughts. Ranked fourth in division 4A with a 1-1 record as well, the Eagles left no stone unturned, cruising to a 16-0 shutout win over the St. Clement’s Anchormen in Saturday morning’s non-league match-up at Dilboy Field.

In the early going, the Anchormen appeared to be on the verge of a touchdown, before a costly turnover. On the Eagles 32, an attempted handoff to senior running back James Alphonse led to a fumble.

From that point on, a few turnovers on both sides of the ball saw the score 0-0 by the end of the first quarter. The Eagles ran the ball well, but the Anchormen defense tackled well – especially defensive ends Rony Charles and Sean Simas. The Anchormen would get the ball back for quarterback Michael Julce but couldn’t convert on key third and fourth down situations. Mired in a 0-0 tie, the Eagles scored twice on rushing touchdowns and converted both 2-point conversions to win 16-0. The Anchormen will kick off league play by hosting Matignon at Dilboy Saturday at 10 a.m..

St. Clement girls soccer earn first win

On the soccer field, the Lady Anchors achieved their first victory of  the season en route to a 4-1 win over league rival Cristo Rey.

“We have a great group of girls that work hard on improving,” said coach Kevin Conlin.  Junior Jen Amaral and eighth grader Rachel Amaral combined for three goals while Junior Nicole Cella added the fourth and final tally. The Lady Anchors aimed to continue momentum on Monday when they faced Lowell Catholic.
