Winter Hill students learn about ‘Mind-Blowing’ physics

On February 27, 2017, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Eighth grade students at the Winter Hill Community Innovation School had an opportunity to find out how a little bit of olive oil affects waves, how we learn what smaller and smaller particles are made of, and other “mind-blowing physics” from Greg Kestin, a theoretical physicist and Harvard faculty member who is also hosting a new NOVA web video series called What the Physics?! Mr. Kestin also shared a little bit about CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, and discussed with students some of the theoretical questions that scientists are pondering now, such as “Is there an alternate universe?” and “What is consciousness?”

Kestin’s visit today was one of a series of events sponsored by AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) and Subaru. Other events include the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books Reception, a Panel Discussion with AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books Recipients, and Family Science Days.  Subaru is donating up to 500 books to the Winter Hill School as part of the Subaru Loves Learning Project.
