In an effort to bolster their fall athletic program, St. Clements recently expanded its selection by adding a varsity swimming squad. According to Athletic Director Shawn Thornton, the program is slated to commence during the winter season.

“Every year I try to see if a sport can be added to improve the quality of the program with the enrollment challenges we face in today’s economic society,” said Thornton.  “The swimming team will be a first for the school.”

After several underclassmen approached Thornton regarding the idea of the program, Thornton researched information and within weeks, the swimming team was formed and initiated.

The school will be in a joint program with Medford High School, whose home pool will be at the campus of Tufts University.

“The contract will be for a two-year term and hopefully encourage more students to swim and represent the school,” said Thornton. “Medford High swims in the Greater Boston League and will be adding around 4-6 swimmers from the Anchordome. It’s a great fit for both schools because the Mustangs swimming facility is Tufts University. Tufts University is within walking distance from Saint Clement on Boston Avenue.”
