Tonight members of Somerville Police Employee’s Association, and the Massachusetts Municipal Police Coalition held a rally at Somerville City Hall to protest the continued display of the Black Lives Matter banner hanging on City Hall.
Good for them. The police department was right, “All Lives Matter”.
City Hall shouldn’t be used as a political billboard, and to single out this political movement is simply exclusionary to all other city residents.
The BLM movement has refused to meet with anyone (at city, state or fed level) to discuss their issues or to promote any kind of open dialog. How does BLM hope to resolve their objections if they refuse to work with gov’t agencies, dpts or individuals to find common ground. It kinda seems that their only objective is to provoke and antagonize.
Shame on Mayor Curtatone for not standing up with his police force – the mayor’s only goal should be a better life for everyone.
Absolutely, Mark, the City hall building should not be used as a billboard for any political agenda. If the mayor wishes to post a political banner supporting any platform or group, he should post it on his own house or in his front yard.
Dumb. And wrong. Showing support for BLM is not a personal “political agenda”. It’s an affirmation of City policy. Those in opposition to it are pushing personal agendas. Everyone who’s being honest about this knows it. Nice try. Not.
Sorry, but it is a political agenda. A policy is a statement written into law. Please don’t fit your political agenda into your own “policy” even if it is the agenda of many others because there are also others who also oppose the posting of this banner which has generated controversy. My statements regarding the banner refer to any banner… There should be no banners of any kind posted on the walls of city hall.
Eh. No. Your insistence that this is politically motivated does not make it so. The mere repetition of a lie never makes it true, but it does reveal the liar for what he/she is.
The more one considers what you’re saying, the clearer it is that your words betray a certain personal agenda on your part. A rather ugly one at that. But I’ll defend to the death your right to be ugly. It’s kind of amusing to watch.
It seems to me, having the “Black Lives Matter” banner at city hall is good for everyone: people “of color” see a positive sign that here in Somerville, they’ll consciously be treated as people with value; police work is made easier by an improved sense of community. (I’m “white,” and have always had positive experiences with the police, state troopers, etc.)
