Craving a nice frozen hoagie? Have no fear, they’re here in Somerville.

Frozen Hoagies – it’s exactly what it sounds like. Is it an ice cream sandwich? Well, owner Mary McPartland says, “A hoagie is more than an ice cream sandwich. It is two scoops of small batch ice cream between two homemade from scratch cookies.”

On July 4, 2011, “Boston’s Original Ice Cream Sandwich Truck” opened for business. The trucks are fantastic; they travel around Boston and surrounding areas. Trucks can be found at different spots on different days at all times of the day. While that makes it easier for the company to profit, being able to target different areas, it could seem tough for the consumer. Well, they’ve taken care of that in a few ways. Frozenhoagies.com keeps a schedule of the trucks location daily and, even better, there is a stationary location.

In November 2014, Frozen Hoagies opened at 864 Broadway, in Powder House Circle. The venue offers a slightly wider variety than the truck, as well as a few menu items exclusive to the shop. This includes weekend brunch and smoothies, as well as frappes and espresso products. And here you can get the supplies to take home, in pints of ice cream and six or twelve pack of cookies.

The choice of opening in Somerville seems to have been an obvious one to McPartland, who says, “Both my parents and grandparents were brought up in Somerville. Plus, it’s a great location.” There’s a good amount of seating inside, and Nathan Tufts Park is right there if you’d rather take it outside.

All of their ice cream is locally sourced from Chilly Cow in Arlington, and they get some amazing flavors. PB&J and Guinness flavored ice creams? The vegan ice cream options are fantastic as well. The cookies are homemade from family recipes – yum! They keep 16-18 ice cream flavors daily (including vegan, sorbet, and yogurt) plus 5-10 different cookie types.

“My favorite hoagie today is peanut butter cup cookies with cow tracks ice cream” McPartland said, earlier this week, “But the possibilities are endless!”
