Foundation Kitchen has been a successful addition to Somerville since its opening late last year. So successful, in fact, that they just opened a second location. The original location is still at 121 Washington Street, and now just up the block, the second location has opened at 3 Washington. June 30 was the official opening day.
Foundation is a shared culinary workspace; they offer space to culinary startups, small businesses, food trucks and events. Husband and wife team Ciaran Nagle and Tara Novak opened the space with the idea of helping would-be restaurants avoid some startup costs, or at least get the ball rolling – menu items tested, chefs tried out, etc. While they did expect other uses for the kitchen, they are wowed by how much use the kitchen gets.
One fantastic use of the space is the city of Somerville Arts Council’s Nibble Entrepreneur program, which teaches aspiring chefs different cuisine. They also allow restaurants to use their kitchen space for catering projects, demonstrations, and pop-up events. With so much continuing to change and grow in Somerville, it seems this will be a long-appreciated venture, and their need for more space is no surprise.
All upcoming events can be found on Foundation Kitchen’s Facebook page. There are lots of fun and tasty events to take in as a consumer, and if you are interested in being on the other side of things, foundationkitchen.com has applications to become a member.
