Listen to live music, eat local food, and win prizes at the Local Roots Food and Music Festival. This is Groundwork Somerville’s fourth year producing the event as a fund raiser for youth gardening and green community efforts.

The outdoor concert at the festival will feature several local musicians. Mark Santoro will sing his own songs and play a mixture of folk and country music with his acoustic guitar. Dylan Chace also sings and plays guitar, but his genre of choice is crybaby rock.

Christian McNeill will play with the Redeemers. Known to break a guitar string during his show, McNeill puts on a high-energy performance. “The musicians are so talented, it will be a nice, folksy music night,” Jennifer Lawrence of Groundworks Somerville said.

In addition to the live performances, DJ Marco Andre, who supervises Groundworks Green Team, will spin for the very first time.

The Swapaholics, an organization that promotes clothing swaps, and Somerville Local First will be at the festival to engage the crowd in activities. Local First aims to highlight the importance of buying locally: $25 of every $100 spent locally goes back into the community. In their activity, Local First will allow participants to choose where the extra money should be spent.

Groundworks Somerville will be selling a variety of products including organically grown tea and walking sticks. One of the local door prizes will be the maple syrup that they boiled themselves last year.

Both Redbones BBQ and Dave’s Fresh Pasta will donate savory items from their menu, with vegetarian options available.

Don’t miss the Local Roots and Music Festival at the Growing Center in Union Square on Sept. 11 from 5 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $20, and the proceeds will benefit youth gardening and green community efforts.
