Established in 1852, our beloved and venerable institution known as Somerville High School has come to a crossroads, as most of us are well aware.

The current structure is no longer capable of providing the safety, security, and support required of a modern-day facility of its kind. The time is clearly here for major renovation and additions to the existing location.

This we already know. The question before us has been how best to serve the needs of our community as we proceed towards a final commitment in our search for the ultimate plan.

Many variations have been proposed. Should we replace the existing structure altogether? Add to it? Just what exactly?

The Somerville High School Building Committee has been tasked with exploring the ramifications and merits of the many different options that have been proposed by designers and engineers.

It looks now as though they are closing in on a plan that involves keeping the old building in place, while putting up modern structures nearby to serve as the primary working facilities.

This seems like a good idea. The old building houses a lot of priceless memories for many thousand of former students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Whatever function it may serve in the future, it’s a good feeling to know that it will still be there.
