We hear that tempers flared last week when a couple of civilian flaggers were permitted to direct traffic at a detail on the Cedar Street Bridge. An off duty police officer from another police department (not a Somerville cop) who just happened to be a Somerville resident as well was driving by and was accused of harassing the flaggers who falsely described the driver to police as a "Somerville Cop." We also heard that a protest consisting of police officers in opposition to the flaggers is in the making and is standing on the sidelines waiting patiently for more flagger sightings in Somerville before they spring into action.
***************
Speaking of civilian flaggers, early Tuesday morning on Medford Street at the bridge behind Somerville High School a Somerville Police officer was asked to patrol with occasional visits at the detail where out of state New Hampshire civilian flaggers were directing traffic during road constructions and to supervise and make sure that nobody harassed the flagmen and that no inappropriate behavior occurred. So now we have to pay police officers to supervise flagmen? What's next?

The city is launching a new community Open Streets initiative, entitled "SomerStreets," beginning with an event along Shore Drive on Saturday, May 22. Open Streets, an initiative that has gained popularity across the country and around the world, encourages community involvement and active living by closing a section of road within the city and offering programming along the route for residents of all ages.
SomerStreets will act as an extension of Shape Up Somerville, promoting active living with programs for bicyclists, walkers, and pedestrians of all ages. The May 22 event will cover a three mile loop, kicking off from Foss Park and continuing along the future Blueback Herring River Route, Shore Drive, and the Mystic River Reservation. Similar programs will be held each month throughout the summer, in different Somerville neighborhoods.
The May 22 event will start with the first public walk of the future Blueback Herring River Route led by Groundwork Somerville's Green Team. The route connects Foss Park to the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse. The Massachusetts Environmental Trust (MET) has provided a grant to improve accessibility and programming along this route and at the Boat House.
SomerStreets continues at Shore Drive where residents will be able to enjoy the Mystic River and programming such as: a bike valet; canoe and paddle boat races; garden demonstrations; face painting, and the announcement of the Winners of the Mayor's Shape Up Somerville Fitness Challenge, which began in March. Groundwork Somerville's Green Team High School Job Corps will be on hand to highlight the recent work done to spruce up Foss Park and to provide accessibility between the park and the Mystic River.
Parking restrictions and street closures will apply to several streets in the Ten Hills area, including Fellsway West at Jaques Street intersection, Jaques Street from Foss Park to Temple Street, Temple Street and Memorial Drive.Roads will be open to abutters, and Somerville Police Officers and other City staff will be available to assist with traffic flow and pedestrian safety. For more information visit www.somervillema.gov/somerstreets, or residents may call (617) 590-6760 for assistance and access information on May 22.
