Newstalk – November 18

On November 18, 2015, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

City Hall rolled out its new website not to long ago, and although we didn’t see much difference at first glance, one of our Newstalkers went online to pay a Traffic & Parking ticket and couldn’t do it. They then called the department, and at first the young lady who answered the phone was extremely helpful and explained that, yes, there were some problems but she worked him through it. Then another Newstalker wanted to download election results and again ran into a problem. Half the page came out black. So we’re wondering how much did this version cost? We heard it’s like the third version done, and what was the cost? Maybe before they roll out a website, they might want to get some testers involved.

Ever wondered what Somerville was like back in the 60’s? A special media event will be happening here in the city on Wednesday November 25 at the Davis Square Theatre at 255 Elm Street. Tickets are at a suggested price of only $10 for a donation that is gladly accepted. The name of the show is Class of 1969 Reunion, a media event hosted by Charles Kelley, who grew up on Winter Hill and graduated from Somerville in 1969, and later became a neighborhood activist throughout the 1970’s. Charlie has put together a collage of both video and still pictures of Somerville in the 60’s. Next week, we will be giving more information but in the meantime you can contact Charlie Kelley at his email kelthink22@gmail.com

Happy Birthdays this week to some of our Villen and friends as well as friends of The Times: To an old friend from Somerville, Artie Mason, a great guy who has not changed a bit over the years. A Vietnam Vet who served us proudly, may he have many more birthdays. Another good friend, Joe Nardella, is from Cambridge but he has done very good by us here in Somerville over the years. We wish him a very happy birthday. Another good friend whom we have known over the years as well, we wish John Hight a happy birthday. To Betty Levin, the lady of Real Estate here in the Somerville/Medford area. She’s one of the best and we wish her happy birthday this week. To Joe Beckman, a funny guy and anytime you get to talk to him he can go nonstop. A great Somerville guy. We wish him the very best and many more to come. A big happy birthday to Bobbygeorge Potaris, a good guy, and although he has strong opinions he’s very well liked by many here in the Ville. We wish him the very best. Earlier this month we meant to say happy birthday to a good guy, – smart when it comes to many things, but math is his specialty – we wish Charlie Chisholm, a lifelong Villen who loves Somerville, a Happy Birthday.

Word of the Week: Pathological Liar. The term “liar, liar pants on fire” takes on new meaning when dealing with a pathological liar. This person may not be completely rooted in reality, believing the lies they tell, often in an effort to remedy low self esteem. Unlike telling a few fibs here and there, or slightly exaggerating the truth once in a while, the pathological liar lies about literally every aspect of his or her life. From how much was spent on dinner last night to talking about the last time the dog was bathed, the pathological liar feels that every bit of communication has strategic meaning positioned for his or her gain. Being lied to on a consistent basis is not only frustrating but also disrespectful to the other person. So how do you determine if you’re dealing with someone who may drop a few fibs on occasion versus a true pathological liar? A few clues and steps may help you draw a sensible conclusion. Sound familiar?

Those who might be interested in obtaining certification for firearms should look up the Lawrence Rod & Gun Club. They offer an extensive program at the end of which you receive certification for Massachusetts/NRA Certified Firearm Safety Classes. They run a class once a month, which is limited to 10 people and we hear that this is the place to go to learn safety when handling guns. Email gunclub@earthlink.net for more information and or go to their website at www.lawrencerodandgunclub.org and read up about the course.

Join Mayor Joseph Curtatone and Ward 1 Alderman Matthew McLaughlin on Friday, Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m. for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Symphony Park. Located at the corner of Pearl and Florence Streets, Somerville’s newest park is inspired by the legacy of the Hadley family who created music on this site and beyond. It features: a lush planting pallet that creates a contemplative garden; a small performance stage and pergola; a water feature and steps created from the original granite steps of the Hadley house; and more.
