Union Square Main Streets is celebrating the summer with a paper party. On August 14 from 3 to 7 p.m., a specialty craft market will be in Union Square featuring origami, paper maché, framers, bookbinding, silk-screening, comics, and more.

Main Streets Executive Director Mimi Graney co-coordinated the event. “I’m looking forward to seeing paper in all its varieties, textures, colors, and shapes,” Graney said.

Weinberg Design, White Sparrow Bindery, and Albertine, Repeat, and Union Press, are just a few of the participating vendors. The Boston Paper Collective will attend, and demonstrate how to make handmade paper. Project Have Hope will display their handmade paper bead jewelry, and donate a portion of the proceeds to families in Uganda.

The party will feature individual artists and their handmade work. Emily Garfield will contribute handmade jewelry and visual art. Christine Price Hamilton will display Tesselights, a form or origami lighting, made of paper, thread, and wooden beads. “We make sure we have different things represented and different price points, so we have something for everyone,” Graney said.

The Woodrow Wilson band will play throughout the event. Endre Papp, from USMS, and co-coordinator of the party, said, “They’re kind of relaxed, and perfect for that atmosphere. It’s easy listening with a rock edge, and there will possibly be a guest appearance.”

Papp is looking forward to the paper party, and said, “I love that fact that everything will evolve around one media: paper. Everything will be different, not everyone will have greeting cards.”

The Paper Party will be located outside Union Square’s central plaza, at the intersection of Washington Street, Prospect Street, and Somerville Avenue.
