A “paint by numbers” mural recreating Francisco Goya’s masterpiece The Parasol, created by Somerville artist James Weinberg, was presented for the public’s participation last week in Boston’s Copley Square.

The interactive project, hosted by Santander Bank, invited those interested to fill in the painting by following a numerical color key and by adding the corresponding color to the mural in order to help complete the community work of art.

The project, which ran from Monday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 26, was conceived in celebration of Santander’s lead sponsorship, through Fundación Banco Santander in Madrid, of the Goya retrospective “Goya: Order & Disorder” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) with a goal bringing the community together to create and appreciate art while Goya to the masses.

“We designed the mural project to draw attention to the arts and give the public the experience of viewing and painting one of Goya’s masterpieces,” said Peter R. Greiff, Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Santander. “This project brings the community together to create and appreciate art and is one of the many ways in which we show our commitment to Boston and New England.”

The community “Paint-By-Goya” mural is inspired by the 170 paintings, prints and drawings of Goya’s work that are included in the “Goya: Order and Disorder” exhibition, which is on view at the MFA now through January 19, 2015.
