After a rain-delay last week, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced the city’s third annual outdoor summer movie series to start July 22.

Curtatone said he was concerned with forecasted rain and lightening July 15, so he canceled the opening night viewing of “Back to the Future.” “We will try to reschedule the movie for a later date,” he said.

The SomerMovie Fest, sponsored by Comcast, will run through the end of August at Seven Hills Park and Community Growing Center. “With the help of Comcast, we have been able to provide the community with this great event that celebrates the summer months in the city,” Curtatone said.

He said he is looking forward to seeing citizens and families come out for the weekly events. “It is an affair that people of all ages can enjoy—young and old.”

The mayor said he thinks the series is reminiscent of a different time. “It is the next best thing to having a drive-in right here in the city.”

Curtatone said he is pleased that crowds have grown since the first summer movie series in 2001. “Participation has only grown since the Movie Fest was first presented.”

Viewers can vote for one of five movies that they would like to see for the last showing of the series on Aug. 26. Residents will be able to cast their votes at each movie or on the city’s Web site, Curtatone said.

“This is a great summer event the entire community can take pride in,” Curtatone said.

(The SomerMovie Fest runs every Thursday through Aug. 26. Movies start at sundown, approximately 8 p.m. Seven Hills Park is located behind the Holland Street T-station in Davis Square; the Community Growing Center is located on Vinal Avenue.
