Reality Bites

If ignorance is bliss – how would we know?

As crotchety as I am most days, it is not my intention now or in the future to adopt the mission statement that ignorance is bliss, it’s just my way of therapeutically broadcasting my interactions with knuckleheads perpetually perambulating through my world.  A heady and arrogant statement – maybe – but that’s my take on it not yours.

Yes, I know I’ve been smarmy and petulant in the past.  You can either laugh or roll your eyes – it’s easy for you, the reader – you have an exit strategy (you can turn the page).

There are the standards – the pushy crack heads in the supermarket, the non-English speaking staff at Dunkin’ Donuts who can’t get a medium black no sugar right, the moron who cut you off to get to the red light before you – they’re all good examples I’ve mentioned before.

It’s about time for some new ones, don’t you think?

The rabid disciples of John Kerry for President – if you actually think that he had an honest shot beyond the anti-Bush sentimentality, then bliss just stung you in the ass.

Don’t get me wrong, I have problems with America

being in Iraq

, but that doesn’t mean that the liberal (compared to TK) Senator from Massachusetts

is our only salvation.

The resolution before the Board of Alderman to divest in Israel and in companies that do business with human rights violators.  I mention the resolution, because both the people who brought up this issue and the members of the Board who were ready to vote on it the other night should have their heads examined.

What in the hell is an issue like that even being brought up in our non-partisan Aldermanic chambers anyway?  The City of Somerville has no business trying to affect foreign policy – it’s more ridiculous than me proposing a resolution that Carmen Electra be appointed Goodwill Ambassador to Winter Hill.  Now that I think of it…

Look – it’s absolutely preposterous – and now it will become a big issue.  My take on this issue is that the group who brought it forward did so in such a fashion as to make members of the board want to toss aside normal committee procedure and take a vote right then and there the other night.  Kind of makes you wonder who was more ignorant – the group who brought the issue forward or the members of the board who will now invariably back away from the issue – I guess only time will tell the winner of that race.

Reality shows – there is a reality show for everyone’s taste these days.  From Survivor to Real World to Growing up Gotti and back around to the whole “Monster” series – do we really need to religiously watch other people’s lives unravel?  Are we as a people that boring – or is it another part of our culture that is just too twisted for the rest of the planet to understand.

I have great respect for film and art – but when it comes to TV shows that originate here and display the inner workings of our culture, it’s no wonder most of the rest of the planet is either enamored with our sugar coated fantasy world existence or they want to kill us all.

Think about it – they’re all around us.  It could be the people who come to this country from a third world nation, make themselves a good living and then complain about how the country is run and/or ignore the law.  Maybe it’s the old person who had no business trying to drive a car anymore.  Quite possibly it’s the average American, who does nothing but complain about having to take off their shoes at the airport.

Listen, so you don’t get overheated about the old person comment – I have night blindness and shouldn’t drive at night anymore – and I generally don’t.  At 36 years of age I can deal with it – so can you at 86 years of age.

I guess what I’m trying to get at is we are all fairly ignorant – and you just can’t get away from it.  Me trying to bitch about it is even ignorant – do I actually think that it might wake some people up by me putting pen to paper?  No.  That’s not the point.
