Alderman-at-Large Denise M. Provost told The Somerville News Tuesday she will not challenge Joseph A. Curtatone’s re-election as the city’s mayor.

Provost said rumors that she had met with former mayoral candidate Tony LaFuente at a lunch at a Cambridge restaurant where LaFuente agreed to back her candidacy were totally unfounded and that she has never had met with LaFuente for a restaurant meal.

If State Rep. Patricia D. Jehlen was elected to the 2nd Middlesex State Senate seat vacated by death of Charles D. Shannon Jr., Provost said she would very likely become a candidate to for Jehlen’s seat.
