So is George Barnoski who, works for the state. Also, our good friend John Serpico, formerly of NJ but is now here living in the Ville and loving it. Ricky Hart, of the famous Hart family, is celebrating this week as well. Our own Jimmy DelPonte, who is a great guy and a big time celebrity here in Somerville, also blows out some candles this week. And Janice Delory, of City Hall, we certainly don’t want to forget to say HB to her. Another nice lady from Somerville and one who was very active in politics here back in the 80’s, Diane Mahoney, who loves to come home to Somerville as often as possible, is also celebrating.

Who’s running and who is thinking about it, and who’s not running for Governor? We hear that Congressman Mike Capuano will announce shortly that he’s not running, and that maybe leaves Mayor Joe Curtatone thinking about it. We hear he’s been seriously thinking about it now for about a year. Funny how all the media wanted to ask him and were surprised at his answer. Can Joe run and win if Martha Coakley runs?

Signs are popping up all over Ward One and Ward Five, but we haven’t seen any in Ward Three. We understand they are coming from the McWatters campaign in particular. We have seen a lot of bumper stickers out there though. We are starting to see more of Mark’s signs in Ward Five, but we also noticed that Courtney’s gotten on the sign bandwagon as well.

The Committee to Elect William (Willy) Medeiros for Alderman At Large is having a campaign kickoff on Wednesday July 31 at the Somerville City Club from 6 to 8 p.m., 20 Inner Belt Road, Somerville. Donation begins at $25. Medeiros is one of seven candidates running for the At Large seats. You can vote for up to four candidates, but not until November. There is no primary.

The 10th Annual National Night Out will take place at Foss Park, Tuesday, August 6. National Night out is a free family friendly event. Get involved in the partnership between public safety and communities to prevent crime and drugs in our neighborhoods. Over 25 tables with information about local agencies, a state K-9 unit demonstration, Bike Safety Demonstration by the Somerville Police Department, and performances by local groups such as the Red Tiger Academy of Martial Arts and Sunsetters.

Celebrate summer with the City of Somerville at “Seize the Summer,” the July installment of the city’s seasonal SomerStreets festival, on Sunday, July 29 from noon to 4pm between Walnut and Cedar Streets on Highland Ave. Seize the Summer is the second of the 2013 SomerStreets celebrations, with the first event having drawn more than 3,000 attendees in June along East Broadway. For this unique street fair, where “roads are closed to cars and open to you,” programming includes: a family bike ride, health & fitness fair; live music; family-friendly activities; craft vendors; food and more. Redbones Annual Pig Pickin’ & Benefit Block Party takes place Monday. Pig Pickin’ & Fund Raiser for The Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) Traditional Southern Pig Pickin’s combine food and function for a finger lickin’ good time and Redbones event does it right.   Whole hogs will be slow smoked on site and served up with all the fixin’s, sides and drinks. When the evening is over, proceeds go to the SHC. The a la carte menu includes pulled pork, loins and butts plus slaw, corn on the cob, collard greens, veggie kabobs, corn bread, mac ‘n’ cheese, hot dogs and watermelon with lemonade, soda, Iced tea and craft beer to drink. Music is part of every Pig Pickin’ and Redbones has rounded up three great local bands to play at the party: The Springhill Rounders, Bluegrass: The Band, & The Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band – the local band with the New Orleans style. The latest Visioning Sessions in the City of Somerville’s “Somerville by Design” community planning series for both East Somerville and Davis Square will be held during the week of July 29. Attendees will be asked to share ideas and goals to help the city create a roadmap for future development based on community needs and wishes in these areas. The upcoming sessions will be held as follows: East Somerville: Monday, July 29th. 6:30 p.m. at the Capuano School, 150 Glen St.; Davis Square:  Tuesday, July 30, 6:30 p.m. at First Church Somerville UCC, 89 College Ave. Somerville by Design is a cutting-edge approach to community planning that uses resident know-how to solve challenging physical planning and urban design issues. It makes planning fun, using highly visual, interactive techniques such as “Open Studio” design sessions, neighborhood meetings, block walking and online surveys. Most important, it provides multiple ways for the public to get involved in generating and refining physical design plans for sites and neighborhoods that are driven by community member’s preferences and creative ideas.
