Bach concerts begin in West Somerville August 26

A West Somerville church is making classical music more accessible to city residents this month.

The West Somerville Church of the Nazarene is presenting three days of J.S. Bach concerts inside its red-brick building August 26, 27 and 30 at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The concerts will be performed by pianist Diran Heller, who said he is excited about getting the opportunity to present some concerts in the Davis Square neighborhood.

"For classical music, people normally go to one long concert in the evening. The idea behind the Bach concerts is to play one short program twice during the day on a Friday, a Saturday and a Tuesday. This makes it easier for people to drop in to hear a concert without a lot of planning ahead," he said.

The choice of Bach is also a conscious decision to increase interest among people who don’t usually find themselves at a classical music concert, he said.

"I chose the music of Bach because I’ve found it speaks both to classical audiences as well as to people who normally listen to other styles," he said.

The West Somerville Church of the Nazarene is located at the corner of Elm Street and Russell Street in Davis Square.
