Somerville Community Corporation To Host Community Meeting on Future of St. Polycarps

The Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) announced today it will host a community meeting  September 13 at 6:30 pm at the Healey School to discuss the upcoming sale of the St. Polycarp’s parish site, located at 100 Temple Street in Somerville.  The St. Polycarp’s property, including the church, rectory, school, and convent, was put up for sale this summer by the Archdiocese of Boston.  SCC plans to submit a bid and proposal for a mixed-use development on the site.

An SCC executive said the Archdiocese is committed to hearing from the community before submitting any plan.

“This property is a community asset, and should be used to meet community needs, including the need for affordable housing” said Danny LeBlanc, SCC’s Chief Executive Officer. “As Somerville’s only community development corporation, we are uniquely positioned to develop a competitive proposal that prioritizes community interests.”

The open meeting will take place at the Healey School Cafetorium at 5 Meacham St.  In addition to updating residents on the sale process, Leblanc said the SCC will share what they have already heard from community members about their desires for the property, as well as solicit further input and ideas from attendees for the proposal and site.

“We are most concerned with what Somerville needs.” LeBlanc said. “We value development that increases the quality of life of the neighborhood.”

The Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) is a community-based non-profit organization that develops and preserves affordable housing, offers supportive services to clients, and leads community organizing efforts that support Somerville residents in their efforts to achieve economic stability and increase civic participation.  In its 35 year history, SCC has completed over 20 affordable housing projects, resulting in 200 ownership and rental units.
