Mayor responds to full page attack ads
By George P. Hassett
Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone used his opening remarks at last night’s public hearing on police reorganization to rebut two full page ads taken out by the Somerville Police Patrolmen’s Union criticizing him.
The ads said Curtatone had decimated or eliminated the detectives’ bureau, the domestic violence unit and the juvenile unit
He said many of the charges leveled against him in the ads were actually the result of decisions made by previous Mayor Dorothy Kelly Gay and others were simply false.
“Those ads were a mere political response,” he said.
Later in the night the President of the Patrolmen’s Union Jack Leutcher responded to Curtatone’s statement.
“That was just a lawyer being a lawyer, saying just enough so that it sounds like the truth,” he said.
