The Somerville Alibrandis Baseball Club trounced the Brighton Black Sox 4-1 on May 10, starting off the 2013 season with a victory. The club has won the championship for the last 3 years in a row, and is looking for their 4th consecutive championship with the help of new pitching staff and slugging power.

“The pitching was great,” said Assistant Manager Cameron Lynch. Pitcher Jon Morse started, going for four innings. Over the course of the four innings, Morse gave up one hit and struck-out seven batters. Pitchers Chris Foundas and Sean Sullivan followed in suit. “We used three of our starters, just to get them some live work…and to get them ready,” added Lynch.  And pitcher Brian Tanguy was the closer and got his first save of the season.

Catcher Chad Conner hit a home run in his first at-bat. Conner missed part of last season due to a serious illness. The team thought it was a wonderful comeback present after missing many games from last season, especially to come back with such a powerful first at-bat. “It was nice to see him comeback and contribute after being, just down the dumps last year,” said Lynch. Conner had two RBI’s on the night.

Third baseman Marc DesRoches went three for three. “He had some solid at-bats…he’s a big key to our line-up. It’s good when he gets hits,” said Lynch. Lynch noted that Mark Annese and Mark Addesa also got some hits.  It’s safe to say, all the ballplayers named Mark, were ‘on the mark’ during the first game of the season.

Anthony Tomaro, who is the “utility player,” was positioned at second base for the first game. For those who are unfamiliar with the term “utility player” it refers to a baseball player that can play several positions in the field during the season. It’s a niche position on the roster and can be of great assistance to the baseball club if a player has been injured and needs to be replaced. Tomaro made a couple errors, but Lynch says, “It’s probably cause he hasn’t been taking ground balls in the winter.”
