MBTA re-opens Davis Square Red Line station
After Inspecting and Testing T‚Äôs Overnight Electrical Work, Somerville Fire Department Allows Station to Resume Passenger Service            

    After MBTA personnel worked through the night to correct communications and electrical problems at the Davis Square Red Line station, Somerville Fire Department and Inspectional Services officials authorized the reopening of the station at shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

   ‚ÄúThe MBTA did quite a lot of work overnight to restore water-damaged police and fire communications systems located in the station,‚Äù said Somerville Fire Chief Kevin Kelleher. ‚ÄúThey shut down or rerouted electrical lines in order to address public safety concerns, and they worked with us to perform a full functional test of the fire alarm system.  We‚Äôre maintaining a fire detail at the station throughout the day, and we expect the T to make additional permanent repairs over time, but we‚Äôre satisfied with the way they‚Äôve addressed the immediate public safety issues.‚Äù

   The station was closed to passenger traffic last night at approximately 1:15 a.m.  When Red Line operations resumed on Tuesday morning, trains were allowed to pass through the Davis Square station, but were not permitted to pick up or discharge passengers. As it continued to work on the electrical and communications problems at Davis Square, the MBTA provided shuttle bus service connecting T riders at Davis Square to both inbound and outbound Red Line service at Porter Square.

   ‚ÄúFrankly, I think we all anticipated that the station was going to be out of service for a longer period,‚Äù said Chief Kelleher.  ‚ÄúBut the T really pulled out all the stops to get the work done overnight, and they‚Äôve made an impressive effort to complete the necessary repairs in a very short time.‚Äù
